FAQs About Shrub Pruning and Trimming

Pruning is the process of precisely selecting and removing individual branches by hand using bypass pruners or loppers. It is designed to target, shape, and refine the plant's internal structure to remove dead wood, improve airflow, and enhance flower yields. Trimming is a faster process that is primarily aesthetic. It is performed using hedge trimmers and focuses on removing outer branches and foliage to create a uniform shape. It does not address plant health.

Each species must be pruned according to its specific needs and schedule. Shrubs that flower in the summer, like smooth hydrangeas, should be printed once a year between February and March. Shrubs that bloom in the spring, like bigleaf hydrangeas and oakleaf hydrangeas, should be pruned once a year in late spring or early summer, right after they bloom. Evergreens and hedges, like boxwoods, should be pruned twice per year; once in early April and again in late June.

You shouldn’t cut branches on shrubs between October and August. We recommend scheduling pruning services between February and June depending on plant species and health.

You should not remove more than one third of the shrub’s total canopy in one pruning session as it can shock the root system and reduce photosynthesis, resulting in weak growth.
